Book Club / The Art of War by Sun Tzu

I chose, this book because it teaches young people to think and plan with a strategy! The book is based upon principles. I know it is talking about war, but in the book war is just a event, but war represents the principle of "challenge". This book is a required read at West Point, Americas elite military school, but it is also a required read at Americas top business schools, because of the principle of challenge!

*NOTES- points of interest

Strategy- a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.

Principle- a rule or belief that governs ones personal behavior.

Challenge- to demand or expect something that is due.

These are the points of interest I want young people to look for when reading the book.

In the East, {Africa, Middle East, Asia} we are taught principles. Which can be applied to any situation.

In the West, {Greek, Europe, America} they are taught cause and effect. Which only can be applied to a certain situation. Thus the saying you can not compare apples and oranges!

Examples.

Eastern style, One child hits another child, the child that was hit, ask the child that hit them why? Based upon the answer a action is taken against the the child that hit the other child.

Western style, One child hits another child, the child that was hit, strikes back with out think! Not taking time to see if it may have been a accident.

Eastern proverb, The dragon thinks and then reacts! The tiger only reacts and never thinks!

I want young people to think, I think in the end this will directly result in less senseless killing and violence in our community which is about 95 % of the problem. Learn to value all life!

Take time with young people ask what they are getting out of the book. Feel free to contact me, e- mail posted on this blog at top of page!

peace, love and unity
