Founder of Black History Month
Carter G. Woodson 1875 to 1950
Historian / Father of Black History Month
Woodson was one of the first Black to study African History. He soon found out that African and African descent people had a long and rich history. Woodson study history at Harvard were he earned his Ph.D and was the second (2) Black to do so after W.E.B Dubious.
While teaching in public school he realized that the history of non- whites in America was large ignored or misrepresented so he decide to do something about it. He and others started a journal "The association of study of African- American life and History. The journal is still printed today.
He also worked for N.A.A.C.P dealing especially with Blacks that had been mistreated by White business owns and called for boycotts of those businesses!
In 1926 he founded Black History Week it was so well liked that it was extended to a whole month. The week coincide with Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln birthdays. Not that Whites gave us the shortest month of the year to celebrated our History! They did not give us anything!
We thank you Carter G. Woodson for giving us knowledge of ourselves!
